1.2 million opium and heroin addicts in Iran
Listen / DownloadIran is suffering from the second most severe addiction to heroin and opium in the world according to the UN office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
There are 1.2 million addicts in the country.
The government is making efforts to prevent the opiates from being imported into the country from neighbouring Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Daniel Dickinson has been speaking to Yury Fedotov, the Executive Director of UNODC who has just returned from Iran. He asked Mr Fedotov what is driving the addiction.
