Man on wheelchair sentenced to jail, rotan - Latest - New Straits Times

PETALING JAYA: A wheelchair-bound man was sentenced to 64 months' jail and 10 rotan strokes today by the Sessions court after pleading guilty to possessing 182.58gm of cannabis three years ago.

M. Alagesan, 30, who is unemployed, committed the offence at an apartment unit at Apartment Harmoni, PJU 10, Damansara Damai, around 10pm on Oct 9, 2009. He was arrested the same day.

The accused, confined to a wheelchair ever since a road accident in 2001, was first charged on Oct 16, 2009, where he initially claimed trial. 

The trial commenced on Aug 11, 2011, and he was ordered to enter his defence on Dec 1 last year.

However, the accused changed his plea to guilty today.

Four witnesses had testified for the Prosecution while the Defence had called three witnesses.

Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz ordered the jail sentence to run from date of arrest.
